My status

There are approximately 1,000 Mbs (megabytes) in 1GB of webspace.

The average website may never use nearly as much as 50 Mbs.  Fifty megabytes can give you quite a large site if you compress or reduce your pictures and photo dpi.  Up until recently we were only able to compress photo dpi to 96 or 72dpi (sometimes loosing quality) but now with the latest compression tools we are able to compress larger format photographs with our new tools before compressing for the web, ensuring that you the quality of your photographs is now better.

To get a better idea of how much space a webspace takes up take a look at some of the websites we have on the sample page.  Most of them are under 5mb, with one or two being just above or just below the 10mb mark.

Bandwidth Transfer - This is the amount of data sent from your website via your host, to your visitor’s computer.  Every time someone visits a page on your site, all the images and text from your host’s web server are downloaded straight to their PC.  Your cookies may retain this memory so that when you visit the website again it downloads quicker.  It is a good idea to clear your cookies out regularly to optimise the efficient running of your computer and to ensure you are up to date with the latest version or update of any website you visit regularly.  If you are unsure whether or not the site you are visiting is showing you the latest version press control and F5 to update.

Bandwidth Limit - Expressed in megabytes or gigabytes per month.

The majority of websites stay well within their bandwidth allocation. However, if you have a site with Flash, animations, film clips, rollovers and/or sound and it is generating a large amount of traffic data then you may need to allocate a larger bandwidth to your account.

Check your Space - Use your control panel to manage your webspace and bandwidth effectively.  It can be quickly upgraded if you think you are going over your limit.

Understanding Webspace and Bandwidth

1. Think about the content on your site, what is necessary and what is not.
2.  If you specialise in a particular field, emphasise it.
3. Look at several websites and think about what appeals to you and why.
4. Do you find large sites a bore? What can you add to make your site more interesting?
5. Are your digital photographs compressed enough to be fast loading on the internet?
6. Do you know how to get your website to the top of most  search engines?
7. Does your website have enough point of contact pages?
8. Can customers find a form or other means of contact immediately they open your site?
